Celebrating Our Rich History in Houston, Texas – Filipino American National Historical Society

Howdy Filipino American History Month: Celebrating Our Rich History in Houston, Texas

By Dr. Pat Lindsay “Pinky” C. Catalla-Buscaino, President of FANHS-HTX

As the President of the Filipino American National Historical Society, Houston, Texas Chapter (FANHS-HTX), it is with great enthusiasm that I extend a warm welcome to Filipino American History Month (FAHM) 2023, celebrating the national theme, “Recognizing 125 Years of Philippine-American History.” October is a special time for us to come together, reflect on our history, and celebrate the remarkable journey of Filipino Americans in the United States.

The Significance of FAHM

Filipino American History Month is more than just a date on the calendar. It represents a commemoration of the struggles, sacrifices, and triumphs of our community throughout history. It is a reminder of the resilience and determination that have shaped our identity in this country.

This observance is especially meaningful because it was initiated by the founders of the Filipino American National Historical Society, http://fanhs-national.org/filam/ Dr. Dorothy Cordova and Fred Cordova, who recognized the importance of preserving and promoting the history and contributions of Filipino Americans. Their dedication led to the establishment of FAHM in October 1992 through a resolution by the Filipino American National Historical Society National Board of Trustees.

I also want to recognize the 100% volunteer FANHS-HTX Board and Conference 2024 Team who make this organization come to life. These are extraordinary Filipino Americans who have carved out time to give back to our community. These people are one of the reasons why we celebrate FAHM.

Ideas for Celebrating FAHM

Now, as we embrace FAHM in 2023, I invite you to join us in celebrating our heritage. Here are some ideas on how you can make the most of this special month:

1. Attend Local FANHS-HTX Events: Keep an eye on our chapter’s calendar on www.fanhshtx.com or follow us on social media @fanhshtx for events and activities planned throughout October.

2. Learn and Share Stories: Take the time to learn about the stories of Filipino Americans who have made significant contributions to various fields. Share these stories with your friends and family to spread awareness of our community’s achievements.

3. Explore Filipino Cuisine: One of the most delightful ways to celebrate is by indulging in Filipino cuisine. Try your hand at cooking adobo, sinigang, or other Filipino dishes at home, or visit local Houston Filipino restaurants to savor the flavors of our culture. Our FANHS-HTX favorite foods hail from supportive Filipino-American restaurants and pop-ups: Be More Pacific, Flip N Patties, and Ube Co.

4. Support Filipino American Artists: Explore Filipino American art, literature, and music. Attend exhibitions, read books by Filipino American authors, or listen to Filipino American musicians to appreciate the creative talents within our community. Pick up a copy of our book, Filipinos in Houston by Christy Poisot, and Jenah Maravilla.

5. Support Filipino American Small Businesses: Show your support for Filipino American entrepreneurs in Houston. Explore Filipino-owned small businesses, from restaurants and bakeries to clothing boutiques and specialty stores. Your patronage can make a meaningful impact on our community.

6. Connect with FANHS-HTX: Consider becoming a member of our chapter to actively engage in preserving and promoting Filipino American history and culture. Your support helps us continue our mission and expand our impact.

7. Community Involvement: Get involved in community service or volunteer activities that benefit Filipino American organizations and causes in your area. Giving back is a meaningful way to honor our community.

A Call to Celebrate Together

As we welcome Filipino American History Month, let us remember that this is not just a time for reflection but also a time for unity and celebration. Our history is rich and vibrant, and it’s a story worth sharing.

I encourage you to embrace FAHM with an open heart and a willingness to learn and celebrate our unique culture and history. Together, we can ensure that the legacy of Filipino Americans continues to shine brightly in the United States.

Join us at FANHS-HTX as we mark this important month with a spirit of gratitude and pride. Together, we can make Filipino American History Month 2023 a memorable and impactful celebration.

Let’s come together, educate, inspire, and remember – Happy Filipino American History Month to all!
