The generations came together on June 7 to mark Philippine Independence Day with a vibrant afternoon of music, dance, and community spirit.
Hundreds gathered to celebrate Filipino culture, enjoying family-friendly activities, traditional food, and performances that showcased the community’s rich heritage.

Special guests included Philippine Consul General Emma Sarne, MP Blake Richards, and Cochrane Mayor Jeff Genung.

Richards recognized youth participating in a three-part dot art workshop with appreciation certificates.

Mayor Genung praised the Filipino community for their warmth and contributions.

“They make me feel so welcome. They’re warm, happy, energetic, giving, caring, and loving people,” he said. “We need more people like them in Cochrane. They’re incredibly hard-working and the first to volunteer—whether it’s a highway cleanup or other community efforts.”
Cochrane is home to more than 1,000 residents of Filipino descent. For years, the community has held an annual celebration during June, which is recognized as Filipino Heritage Month in Alberta.
