San Antonio native Jordan Clarkson meets Alex Eala at U.S. Open

San Antonio native Jordan Clarkson crossed paths with rising tennis star Alex Eala at the U.S. Open on Thursday, bringing together two prominent Filipino athletes from different corners of the sports world.

ESPN shared video of the meeting on social media, showing the New York Knicks guard and Eala congratulating each other and bonding over their shared Filipino heritage.

Clarkson is coming off a championship season with the Knicks, who defeated the San Antonio Spurs in five games in the 2026 NBA Finals. The San Antonio native attended Wagner High School.

“I wear my culture on my sleeve,” Eala told Clarkson. “It brings so many people together. It’s crazy how people can connect through culture and just nostalgia. I think it’s a really powerful thing.”

Clarkson, who has represented the Philippines in international basketball, agreed.

“When you got Filipino blood, [you] take the whole country with you, the whole pride,” Clarkson said.

The two also discussed representing Filipino culture through their respective sports.

“We’re doing a lot for the country and the culture,” Clarkson said.

Eala called 2026 “a big year for the culture.”

Their conversation eventually turned to sports. Eala noted the Philippines’ passion for basketball, while Clarkson praised her impact on tennis.

“You’re leading the way for tennis,” Clarkson told her.

Clarkson also pointed to the Filipino support surrounding Eala at the U.S. Open, including Philippine flags visible in the stands.

“I’m proud of you,” Clarkson told her.

The meeting brought together two athletes who have represented the Philippines on the international sports stage. For Clarkson, it came just months after the former Wagner standout returned to San Antonio for the NBA Finals and left his hometown as an NBA champion.
