The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and Department of Agriculture (DA) have partnered to utilize Earth observation (EO), data products, geospatial technologies, and other space-enabled tools for agricultural and fisheries, environmental, and disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) applications with the goal of strengthening food security and improving lives.
PhilSA Acting Director General Gay Jane P. Perez, Ph.D. and Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 15 September 2026.
“The goal is to make sure that our famers have access to better information when deciding how to manage their crops, or that a fisherfolk community can better navigate changing conditions at sea,” Dr. Perez said, highlighting the importance of this partnership in bringing the benefits of space to Earth.
Under this partnership, PhilSA will provide satellite-derived data, develop information products, and provide technical inputs to support the agriculture-fisheries sector. DA will conduct field data gathering activities and contribute sectoral knowledge on the realities and needs of agricultural and fishing communities, as well as its technical expertise.
Both agencies will also strengthen the operational use of space applications and undertake capacity-building and knowledge-sharing activities on EO data, geospatial information, and other space-enabled tools for agricultural and DRRM applications.
PhilSA has also been supporting the agricultural sector through its collaboration with the DA-Bureau of Agricultural and Fisheries Engineering (DA-BAFE) with the Farm-to-Market Road and Agricultural Commodity Geodatabase and Remote Sensing Application Phase I, or the DigitalAgri project in 2024.
