THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Tuesday warned illegal recruiters that the agency has ongoing law enforcement efforts, urging applicants to take more caution.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac urged applicants to be cautious in choosing their recruitment agencies following the arrest of an illegal recruiter from New Zealand in Iloilo. He noted that 1,700 Filipinos have been rescued from being recruited for false jobs in Europe.
“We do not condone illegal recruitment. In fact, we have a partnership between the DMW and the New Zealand Embassy, through Ambassador Kira Azucena in Wellington, to combat human trafficking,” Mr. Cacdac said at a news briefing in Filipino.
The DMW kicked off the Philippines and New Zealand friendship week on Aug. 25, reaffirming mutual commitment to Filipinos’ labor protection as the two countries marked 60 years of diplomatic ties.
He added that the agency’s law enforcement efforts in coordination with the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Justice have resulted in the closure of about 30 illegal recruitment firms in 2026.
“For the first time, we are conducting widespread closures outside of Metro Manila. So, to illegal recruiters outside of Metro Manila — illegal recruiters, prepare yourselves. We will come after you,” Mr. Cacdac said. — Kaela Patricia B. Gabriel
