A total of 1,370 classrooms were reportedly damaged due to Typhoon Opong and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), according to the Department of Education (DepEd).
Of the total number, 891 classrooms have minor damage, 225 sustained major damage, and 254 were totally damaged, based on DepEd’s Saturday situation report.
DepEd also said 13.3 million learners and 569,000 personnel in 23,796 public schools across 13 regions were affected by the weather disturbance.
Most of the affected students came from the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, CALABARZON, Central Luzon, and MIMAROPA.
The Education Department also logged 121 schools serving as evacuation centers.
The agency added that it is coordinating with local government units in implementing response protocols and preparing schools for the resumption of classes.
It is also coordinating with other humanitarian partners in providing resources and technical support to affected regions.
Opong exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday morning.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said a total of 738,714 families, or 2,797,706 people, were affected by tropical cyclones Mirasol, Nando, Opong, and the Habagat.
