KATSEYE Sophia, UNIS Gehlee

Global idols Sophia Laforteza of KATSEYE and Gehlee Dangca of UNIS voiced support for Filipinos, encouraging them to “take a stand” following the September 21 anti-corruption rallies.

Despite their rising international careers, Filipino pop sensations Sophia Laforteza of KATSEYE and Gehlee Dangca of UNIS have not forgotten their roots. Both artists echoed a call for unity and urged Filipinos to “take a stand” in light of the September 21 anti-corruption rallies.

In a heartfelt Instagram Story posted on Monday, September 22, Sophia expressed regret that she could not join the demonstrations in person. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be there, but my heart stands with my fellow countrymen,” she wrote, underscoring her solidarity with the movement.

“My heart is with my people. We all deserve a future built on truth, integrity, and hope. Para sa ating bansa, at para sa sambayanang Pilipino (For our country and for Filipinos), we must always strive for what is just and fair,” she said.

In the same post, Sophia also shared her dream of a future where the Philippines is free from corruption.

“We dream of a Philippines free from corruption, where accountability and compassion guide us forward. The voice of the Filipino people is powerful and unshakeable. Even if I cannot be present in today’s rallies, I am listening, I am aware, and I stand with you,” she said.

Meanwhile, Gehlee took to UNIS’ official Instagram page to urge her followers to “take a stand,” posting in time with the rallies. While K-pop idols have occasionally spoken out on social issues, such statements remain uncommon given the strict management of Korean entertainment agencies. Gehlee, however, also maintains her own personal social media platform.

Sophia serves as the leader and vocalist of the global girl group KATSEYE, which also includes Manon Bannerman, Daniela Avanzini, Lara Rajagopalan, Megan Skiendiel, and Jeong Yoonchae. The six-member act has earned recognition for tracks such as “Gnarly,” “Gabriela,” “Touch,” and “Gameboy.”

Meanwhile, Gehlee takes on the role of vocalist and visual in the K-pop girl group UNIS, alongside members Hyeonju, Nana, Yoona, Kotoko, Yunha, Seowon, and fellow Filipina Elisia.

Both groups have steadily built a global following, with KATSEYE making waves in the international pop scene through their bold sound and dynamic performances, while UNIS continues to cement its presence in the competitive K-pop industry.

For Filipino fans, having Sophia and Gehlee in these groups has become a point of pride, as the two artists represent homegrown talent on the world stage.
