Syrian-born content creator and naturalized Filipino Basel Manadil, more popularly known as The Hungry Syrian Wanderer, stood shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands of Filipinos during the September 21, 2025 anti-corruption protests across the Philippines.
In photos he shared on social media, Basel was seen in the middle of the massive crowd at Luneta Park, holding firm despite the blistering heat. The vlogger later posted images of his sunburnt neck and arms, saying: “I stand with Filipinos. Rain or shine. I love this country 🇵🇭❤️.”
The September 21 rallies — dubbed by some groups as the “Trillion Peso March” — were staged to condemn alleged anomalies in the government’s multibillion-peso flood control projects. Protesters demanded accountability from contractors and politicians accused of pocketing public funds, stressing that billions meant for disaster prevention were lost to corruption.
The protests coincided with the anniversary of Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s declaration of martial law in 1972, making the calls for transparency and justice more symbolic. Tens of thousands filled the streets of Manila, Cebu, and other key cities, waving placards and chanting for reforms.
Despite generally peaceful demonstrations, reports confirmed sporadic clashes near Mendiola and Ayala Bridge, where rocks and debris were hurled at police. Authorities recorded arrests and injuries, though majority of the rallies ended without violence.
