Filipino viewers were surprised when two characters from the Netflix supernatural series “Wednesday” suddenly spoke in Filipino during the sixth episode of its second season.
The scene showed werewolf Bruno Yuson (played by Noah Taylor) taking a phone call from his “mother,” with Enid Sinclair (played by Emma Myers) nearby.
Moments earlier, Bruno’s phone had been buzzing with messages.
“Miss na kita. Miss ko na ‘yung pagpasyal natin sa beach. Miss ko na lalo ‘yung mga matamis na labi mo. Baba ko na ‘to, mahal ko,” Bruno said in the phone call.
Enid overheard the call and appeared behind him midway through the conversation.
Bruno explained that he was “just talking” to his “mom in the Philippines.”
Enid replied that he and his mother “are awfully close,” before playfully repeating his lines in Filipino.
“Was that really your girlfriend back home you failed to mention in act of time-honored misogynistic deception?” she asked him.
When Bruno asked how she knew Filipino, Enid said she had “picked it up” from Datu, her “Filipino fencing instructor.”
Bruno admitted that he had been meaning to tell her, “but it’s complicated.”
“Let me uncomplicate it. We’re done. ‘Wag mo na akong kausapin, manlolokong taksil,” Enid responded.
In the second season, Enid and Bruno have been getting closer to each other.
The scene surprised Filipinos, who shared their various reactions on social media.
An entertainment website also posted screengrabs of the scene and wrote, “Uy, Pilipins!”
The post has garnered 15,000 laughing reactions and 1,100 shares so far.
“Nagulat ako kahapon habang pinapanuod ko, sabi ko, bigla nag-Tagalog!” a Facebook user wrote in the comments with grinning-with-sweat emojis.
“Mas makata pa si Bruno kaysa sa mga Pinoy sa Pinas. Haha,” another wrote.
“Minsan na nga lang may Pilipino, cheater pa,” a different online user commented in response to the scene with a facepalm emoji.
“Cheater pa naging representative ng Philippines,” another Pinoy wrote with a laughing emoji.
“Tawa ko dito, grabe,” another commented.
“Nagulat nga ako nung nag-Tagalog bigla!” a different online user exclaimed.
“Akala ko napindot ko lang ‘yung dubbed at subtitle sa Filipino, sila pala talaga ‘yun!” another said.
The role of Bruno is played by Filipino-American teen actor and musician Noah, who “did a lot of takes” to secure the part. His mother is Filipino, while his father is American.
Netflix premiered the first four episodes of the second season of “Wednesday” in August, followed by the remaining episodes on September 3.
The latest season follows the titular character as she returns to Nevermore Academy, where fresh foes and woes await her.
