Netflix has never shied away from surprising its audiences, but few expected the spooky world of Wednesday to suddenly bring in a splash of Filipino flavor.

In the latest drop of episodes for Season 2, the show unveiled a twist that caught Filipino fans off guard with characters Enid Sinclair and newcomer Bruno Yuson were heard speaking in Tagalog.

Bruno, a half-Filipino werewolf played by Filipino American actor Noah Taylor, makes his mark in the second half of the season. While his identity as a Filipino character already drew interest, it was the actual use of the Filipino language that made buzz on the internet.

Viewers on the internet are divided, with mixed reactions from Filipino audiences. Some expressed genuine surprise, while others found the attempt simply amusing.

The scene takes place in episode six, “Woe Thyself.” After a magical mishap causes Wednesday and Enid to switch bodies, Wednesday (while inhabiting Enid’s body) overhears Bruno making a hushed phone call.

That’s when he delivers the lines that set social media abuzz: “Miss na kita. Miss ko na yung pagpasyal natin sa beach. Miss ko na lalo yung matamis na mga labi mo. Baba ko na ’to, mahal ko.”

It doesn’t take long before Enid catches him, furious at what she believes is betrayal. Bruno quickly tries to cover, claiming he was only talking to his mother. But Wednesday isn’t convinced. She throws his words back at him with her trademark bite: “You and your mother are awfully close. Or was that your girlfriend back home that you failed to mention in an act of time-honored, misogynistic deception?”

The twist escalates when Enid reveals she understands every word. She explains she once had a Filipino fencing coach named Datu who taught her Tagalog. Heartbroken and angry, she cuts ties with Bruno with one last line: “’Wag mo na akong kausapin, manlolokong taksil.”
