THE Manila Times School of Journalism will hold its fourth masterclass for this year on Aug. 29 at The Manila Times office in Sitio Grande, Intramuros, Manila.
This month’s masterclass will focus on how to write engaging feature articles in Filipino in celebration of National Language Month (Buwan ng Wika).
For this month, the class will be spearheaded by Dr. Luis P. Gatmaitan, a renowned physician and author of more than 70 books for children.
His works include “Sandosenang Sapatos,” “Si Duglit ang Dugong Makulit,” and “Ang Pambihirang Buhok ni Raquel.”
He pioneered the popularization of medical and health themes through his children’s book series “Mga Kuwento ni Tito Dok.”

Gatmaitan also won the Palanca Awards seven times for his children’s stories and essays in Filipino, and was elevated to the Hall of Fame of the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature in 2005.
His books have been translated to Nihonggo, Danish, Thai, Bahasa Indonesia, Mandarin, and Bangla.
His children’s story “Sandosenang Sapatos” was turned into a musical production by the Tanghalang Pilipino of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
He sits as the sectoral representative for writers in the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY).
He is also a columnist for Pinoy Peryodiko, an online newspaper of The Manila Times in Filipino.
Currently, he is the chairman of the National Council for Children’s Television, an attached agency of the Department of Education that espouses child-friendly shows in Philippine television.
For his contribution to literature, he is recognized with Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas in 2017.
Gatmaitan is the first Filipino author to be nominated for the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Awards in Sweden for his body of work in Philippine children’s literature.
