‘The start of healing’ Filipino community kicks off Mabuhay celebrations

Nearly two months after the tragic Lapu Lapu day attack, the Filipino community kicks off its two-day event celebrating their independence.

Mabuhay! celebrations began Saturday, with more than 60 vendors and performers expected at Centennial Square throughout the weekend.

Mabuhay translated means “to live”, but organizers say the word holds more meaning for their event.

“Everybody’s welcome. We embrace everyone. It’s basically us sharing good vibes,” said Melissa Badua, president of the Bayanihan Cultural and Housing Society.

It’s the 127th celebration of independence for the Filipino community. In the 1500s, Lapu-Lapu led the battle against Spanish colonization and is commemorated at the end of April each year.

Nearly two months ago, 11 people were killed in a car attack at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver. One man is facing several counts of second-degree murder in the incident.

Mabuhay to some is the start of the healing process.

“This is the start of healing, we have to move on,” said Connie Custodio.

“It’s a way of embracing the victims and their families. It’s a way of showing that we are all united,” said Badua.

“It’s a celebration of seeing lights over darkness…we always see the brightness in every hardship. It’s something we have to celebrate,” said Mike Caparas, president of the Victoria Filipino Canadian Association (VFCA).

Since the attack, support has been overwhelming for the community, ranging from government officials, Indigenous leaders and the public.

Giving back and helping others is ingrained in the Filipino culture, according to Badua.

“We have this notion or idea that when you say it’s a Filipino [celebration] — oh it’s all about giving love, giving service, taking care of others. Which is exactly what’s been going on for generations.”

With the large turnout on day one of the celebrations and the waves of support, organizers say they feel ‘blessed’.

“In every struggle or situation that we’re facing, that’s why we’re so blessed,” said Caparas.

The event will continue on June 15.
