MANILA – A fundraising dinner and fashion show in support of Alas Pilipinas and the country’s hosting of the FIVB Men’s World Championship in September was held at Foro de Intramuros Saturday night.
Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, co-chairperson of the local organizing committee (LOC) and chair emeritus of the Philippine National Volleyball Federation, said sports is one of the most powerful tools for shaping the values that build a strong nation.
Presidential son William Vincent Marcos, Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco and the incoming Philippine Sports Commission chief, Patrick Gregorio, are the other LOC chairpersons.
Senator Pia Cayetano, Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino and sports patron Manuel V. Pangilinan make up the LOC board.
“Tonight is not only about giving thanks. It’s also about nation-building,” Cayetano said in his speech at the “Spike for a Cause” event.
“Every single value that we want for our nation is found in sports — teamwork, discipline, sacrifice.”
He stressed that the values go beyond athletics and are vital for families, schools, and communities.
“From the youngest age, we teach our children that in family and in business, there should be teamwork. In sports, it’s a given,” he said.
Cayetano pointed to sports as a powerful alternative for the youth, particularly in the fight against drugs.
He acknowledged Marcos and other partners — from business to fashion – who share a common goal.
“Whether it’s the SEA (Southeast Asian) Games, basketball or volleyball, we will showcase the best of the Filipino,” he said, urging prayers for peace and the tournament’s success.
A total of 32 countries, including host Philippines, are participating in the world championship to be held at Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City and Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. (PNA)
