Playing in a rivalry game between San Beda University and Colegio de San Juan de Letran was something Janti Miller had always looked forward to ever since deciding to join the Red Lions.
And so in his first taste of action of that storied match-up, Miller made sure to show why.
The Filipino-American guard top-scored with 22 points, highlighted by the last two baskets he scored in the final sequence that sealed it for the redemption-seeking Red Lions.
Miller closed the game by first denying Mark Omega on his layup attempt before coming up with a tough layup and a two-handed slam to punctuate his dominant outing.
“Since my residency and as soon as I landed, I kept saying ‘Letran, Letran, Letran’ and the rivalry and so to wait a year, and in practice, in the whole preseason, and finally being here, it’s an honor and it was fun out there,” Miller said.
“It was fun because the crowd, they were going back and forth and. I’m still getting used to the drums. The drums were banging all the time, I can’t hear. I’m getting used to it.”
Miller did that all despite being an off-the-bench player.
But that role doesn’t bother the 6-foot-4 winger, stressing he accepts whatever the coaching staff gives him and vows to give it all no matter what.
“It doesn’t matter if I come off the bench or a starter. When I get out there, it’s go time. Whenever coach pulls me out there and I would just go, it’s our connection,” he said.
But head coach Yuri Escueta was quick to remind his star recruit to remain grounded, saying they still have a long way to go in the season.
“Sabi ko lang sa kanya after the game is to stay humble. Matagal pa ‘tong season na ‘to, maaga pa,” Escueta said.
“So I’m sure he’s gonna see a lot more different kinds of defense and ayun nga, the best way for him to handle this is to stay grounded.”
