Rico Blanco releases long-awaited farewell ballad ‘Paalam’

Filipino music icon Rico Blanco returns with “Paalam,” a deeply emotional ballad decades in the making—now available on all digital music platforms under Sony Music Entertainment.

Known for crafting some of the most enduring anthems in Filipino rock and pop, Blanco’s newest release stands apart as one of his most personal and delicately composed works to date.

“Out of all the songs I’ve released, Paalam is the song that took me the longest to finish,” said Blanco.

“Some songs I finish in minutes, days, or weeks, but this one has been a work in progress for many, many years.”

Originally conceived in the 1990s after a bandmate’s departure, the song took on new layers of meaning after the recent passing of Blanco’s brother—shaping Paalam into more than just a goodbye, but a meditation on grief, acceptance, and self-renewal.

With minimalist instrumentation, kundiman-inspired phrasing, and sweeping orchestral flourishes, Paalam pulls listeners into a quiet, cinematic space where the pain of parting becomes a sacred rite.

Blanco said the track’s arrangement had been clear to him from the beginning.

“Production-wise, I always knew how I wanted the song to sound,” he shared. “I wanted it to have a timeless arrangement, or some would say a bit traditional.”

Despite writing and shaping the song over many years, Blanco admitted he long believed another artist should perform it.

“All these years, I kept waiting for the right singer to come along,” he said.

But as the song evolved, it became increasingly clear that Paalam was Blanco’s story to tell.

The release follows a wave of renewed interest in Blanco’s solo catalog, particularly Your Universe, which recently broke into Spotify Philippines’ Top 10 years after its original release—introducing his music to a younger generation of fans.

In Paalam, Blanco leans into the quiet beauty of letting go, blending personal loss with universal resonance in a way few songwriters can.

The track exemplifies what longtime fans have come to admire: songs that are not just written but lived through, often revealing deeper truths with each listen.

As of August 2025, Paalam is available on all major streaming platforms, with downloads typically priced between PHP 25–50 depending on the store.

Rico Blanco is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Original Pilipino Music (OPM), first rising to fame as the chief songwriter and frontman of the band Rivermaya.

Since launching his solo career in 2008, Blanco has consistently pushed creative boundaries, exploring genres from rock to synth-pop, folk, and experimental electronic music.

Over the years, he has not only released chart-topping records but also produced for younger artists, scored for film and television, and recently co-founded Balcony Entertainment, a music label and creative agency.

He remains one of the few Filipino artists whose catalog spans decades while staying culturally and emotionally relevant.

With Paalam, Blanco adds a quiet masterpiece to his discography—one that honors the past while gently lighting the way forward.
