MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine embassy in Sweden formalized the Philippine government’s commitment to support the Philippine Studies Program at Stockholm University with the signing of a Donation Agreement.
Led by Ambassador Patrick Chuasoto and Birgit Tremml-Werner, associate professor of history at Stockholm University, the Donation Agreement was signed on Sept. 2 at the University’s Frescati Campus.
The program intends to open doors for research, teaching and academic exchange on Philippine history, culture and society with the aim of deepening cultural and educational ties between the Philippines and Sweden.
In his remarks, Chuasoto said the donation represented a “shared vision of making Philippine knowledge more accessible to Swedish audiences.”
He also shared some of the ongoing and planned projects of the embassy include the Silid-Aralan sa Embahada (Classroom at the Embassy) and the translation from Spanish to Swedish of the critically acclaimed “Noli Me Tangere” (Touch Me Not) by national hero José Rizal, which will provide Swedish readers and students a better understanding of the Philippines’ colonial history and literature.
Tremml-Werner also provided a lecture on the planned activities under the Philippine Studies Program, which include the possible screening and lecture on the Philippine classic “Bona” (1980), starring Nora Aunor and directed by Lino Brocka, both Philippine National Artists.
