MANILA – Philippine Army (PA) and US Army Pacific (USARPAC) forces formally concluded large-scale land, air and sea operational maneuvers as part of the “Salaknib” Phase 2 drills in various areas in Cagayan Valley on Thursday.

In a statement, Army spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala said these maneuvers involved 1,200 PA and USARPAC troops who carried out critical exercises, such as special operations forces missions, gap crossing, ground assault convoy sustainment, and communication on the move.

More than 100 mobility assets from both ground forces traveled north from Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija to the Bagabag Airstrip in Nueva Vizcaya; Isabela State University Oval in Echague, Isabela; and Camp Melchor Dela Cruz in Gamu, Isabela.

On the sea and air domains, two ground forces deployed armor assets from two points in Luzon to Port Irene in Cagayan, utilizing a US Navy landing craft unit, while about 16 air assets transported troops and supplies.

“The combined exercises between Philippine and US ground troops support the PA’s strategic thrust to develop an agile force that is capable of swift deployment across diverse operational scenarios. The annual ‘Salaknib,’ which is being highlighted by a full battle test this year, also deepens the interoperability between the PA and US Army Pacific while simultaneously reinforcing the PA’s capacity to defend the country against external threats,” Dema-ala said.

“Salaknib,” which means “shield” in Ilocano, reflects the historical bond between the two nations dating back to World War II, when Filipino and American troops fought side by side to defend freedom and democracy.

“Salaknib” Phase 1, which took place from March 24 to April 11, was the 10th iteration of the annual military maneuvers between Filipino and American troops.

Meanwhile, “Salaknib” Phase 2 began on May 19 and ends July 20. (PNA)
