Gina Ortiz Jones just made history as San Antonio’s first ever Filipino-American mayor, and she’s ready to buckle down to work.
Elated by her victory, the former undersecretary of the US Air Force under the Biden administration thanked everyone who trusted and supported her public service journey.
Affiliated with the Democratic Party, the 44-year-old Jones edged out Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos in a runoff election to become the next mayor of San Antonio.
“Thank you, San Antonio! We won this together. I am grateful for the trust you have placed in me, and I look forward to being a mayor for all San Antonians,” she said in a Facebook post.
“Thank you to my team, our volunteers, a strong coalition of unions and organizations, and everyone who helped get the word out about this campaign. You knocked on doors, made calls, sent texts, and supported me throughout. Now, the hard work begins,” she said.
Born to a Filipino immigration from Pangasinan, Jones was raised in San Antonio. From John Jay High, she earned an Air Force ROTC scholarship to Boston University.
Her mayoral plans include tackling affordable housing, childcare access, and education.
