Labit Shares Memories of “Mangoes and Rice”

An uplifting pop gem that pays tribute to family and culture.

Filipino-American artist Labit continues to carve out his space in the indie-pop scene with music that’s as honest as it is healing. Known for introspective gems like “PRETTY,” “CLEANING OUT MY FRIDGE,” and “FEBRUARY,” Labit returns with a five-track EP titled MANGOES AND RICE—a warm, emotionally charged collection centered around growth, family, and self-reflection. At its core is the standout title track, “Mangoes and Rice,” which also arrives with a beautifully nostalgic official music video.

On Instagram, Labit shared the deeply personal inspiration behind the song: “I wrote this for my sister when she was feeling overwhelmed by life in general and stuck in the feelings of trying to prove herself.” That tender intention can be heard in every note. Anchored by melodic acoustic guitar and soft, ambient tones, the track has a laid-back groove that immediately invites you in. Labit’s vocals—gentle but rich with emotion—carry the song’s message of encouragement and grounding with disarming sincerity.

He elaborates further, saying, “I think it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of everything and a lot harder to slow down and appreciate everything you’ve accomplished. Myself included. This song is a reminder to do that.” That message shines through in lyrics like, “You don’t gotta waste all of your time, Go get up and leave this all behind, Trust fall, You’ll be fine,” and “Mangoes and rice, Back when we were just kids, We go outside, Feel the rays on our skin.” They’re lyrics that feel like a warm hug—simple, heartfelt, and full of meaning.

More than just a catchy tune, “Mangoes and Rice” is a reminder to reflect, breathe, and appreciate the quiet victories. Fueled by soul-infused instrumentation and visuals that lean into joyful childhood nostalgia, Labit crafts a moment that feels both timeless and timely. For anyone caught in life’s fast lane, this track is a gentle nudge to slow down and savor what really matters.
