In advancing economic diplomacy and global partnerships

As part of its ongoing efforts to expand international partnerships and promote economic diplomacy, the Philippine government continues to engage key figures in advancing its global agenda. The current administration has appointed Ambassador-at-Large Jose E.B. Antonio to support efforts in enhancing the country’s international economic engagement.

Antonio, entrepreneur, and founder of one of the leading real estate companies in the Philippines, has long been at the forefront of promoting the country as a growing hub for trade and investment. Known for his ability to bridge cultures and forge lasting partnerships, Antonio first served as Special Envoy to China in 2005 under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. In 2016, he was appointed Special Trade Envoy to the U.S. by then-President Rodrigo Duterte.

As an Ambassador-at-Large for Trade Relations, Antonio aims to elevate Philippine economic diplomacy and strengthen partnerships with nations around the world.

Building Bridges, Strengthening Bonds

Antonio emphasizes the importance of direct, personal diplomacy in navigating today’s complex global economy.

“One of my key roles is to bridge communication between world leaders, person-to-person, face-to-face,” Antonio shared. “By fostering direct dialogue with global leaders and decision-makers, we can address government-to-government and business-to-business concerns more effectively and chart new opportunities for cooperation.”

The U.S.–Philippines relationship, he noted, is especially deep; rooted in shared history, and enriched by the contributions of over 4.2 million Filipinos living in the U.S. *(per U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 data analysis). They not only support their families back home through remittances but also strengthen bilateral ties through their expertise and leadership in American communities. In addition, the Philippines hosts a sizable market of Filipino Americans — many born in the U.S. but returning as “balikbayan” — as well as American citizens residing locally and a significant American-Asian population. According to estimates published by the U.S. Census Bureau 2023, there are about 4.5 Filipino-Americans in the Philippines plus Americans and international tourists who can be part of a core market.

Positioning the Philippines as a Global Hub for Talent, Services, and Sustainable Tourism

Antonio has been a consistent advocate for establishing the Philippines as a leading service-driven economy by capitalizing on its strengths in IT-BPM, healthcare, and tourism.

The Philippines has become a trusted source of talent in medical, BPO, and professional services globally,” Antonio said. “This reflects the skill, dedication, work ethic, and global mindset of the Filipino workforce.

Tourism, he believes, remains a powerful catalyst for economic growth.   “Tourism stimulates a wide range of sectors — from hospitality and retail to transportation and local enterprises — creating livelihoods for everyone, from waitstaff to hotel owners.”

Fostering Connections Through Lifestyle and Investment

Antonio observes a growing trend: more Americans,  and other citizens from across the globe, are looking at the Philippines as an ideal place not only for travel but also as to live, invest, and build their future.

“Combined with our English-speaking communities, competitive costs, and fast-growing economy, the Philippines offers opportunities for entrepreneurs, investors, retirees, and remote professionals seeking both lifestyle and business success.”

With tropical beaches, modern cities, and a welcoming environment, the Philippines has become increasingly attractive for those seeking affordable living, robust connectivity for remote work, and a vibrant yet tranquil quality of life.

“We’re seeing a shift,” Antonio noted. “What once drew Filipinos to the U.S. is now inspiring Americans and other global citizens to rediscover the Philippines – not just for holidays, but as a home and as a hub for investment.”

Championing Philippine Growth on the Global Stage

As Special Trade Envoy and Ambassador-at-Large, Antonio continues to champion policies and initiatives that strengthen international partnerships, promote sustainable development, and position the Philippines as one of the leading players in the global economy.

“Our mission is to ensure the Philippines thrives by building bridges between nations, businesses, and people. The opportunities are here, and the time is now.” Antonio concludes.
