PENTICTON, Canada — Embattled contractor Sarah Discaya has been a mainstay in Philippine headlines the past week, and Filipinos are once again responding with a dose of humor and creativity on social media.
Discaya finally appeared at the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing on the country’s flood control projects on Monday, September 1, where lawmakers scrutinized her true role in her family’s construction firms.
Clips and images of the former Pasig mayoral candidate at the hearing circulated on social media, with many quick to point out Sarah Discaya’s resemblance to comedian Michael V.
Posts from Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines president Pablo Virgilio “Ambo” David and lawyer Jesus Falcis were among those that gained traction online, prompting humorous reactions from internet users.
Even the sketch comedy show “Bubble Gang,” which Michael V has been part of since it began, joined in the fun by superimposing an image of the comedian in white with a girlish haircut over a photo of Discaya at the Senate hearing.
Filipinos are hoping that the show and Michael V take it a step further by creating a parody or skit about the embattled contractor.
Aside from discussions about her family companies’ involvement in ghost projects and alleged special ties to Department of Public Works and Highways officials, another hot topic during the Senate hearing was the Discayas’ famed collection of luxury cars.
The Bureau of Customs (BOC) served a search warrant at the headquarters of St. Gerrard General Contractor and Development Corp., one of the Discayas’ family companies, in Pasig City. However, they were able to trace only two of the 12 cars slated for inspection.
Discaya was a no-show at the House Infrastructure Committee hearing on anomalous flood control projects, along with four other invited government contractors.
