House Majority Leader and Ilocos Norte Rep. Sandro Marcos said there will be no changes in the chairmanships of the committees in the House of Representatives after the election of the new Speaker, Isabela Rep. Faustino “ Bojie” Dy III.
“We are in the middle of budget deliberations. We need to pass the most important law in our country, which is the national budget. So I don’t think there will be any changes for now in the chairmanships or the composition of the leadership because it is too disruptive to what they are doing,” Marcos told reporters.
“We start plenary debates on Monday. Hanggang madaling araw ‘yan,” he added, referring to the pending proposed P6.7 trillion budget for 2026.
(That will run until dawn.)
The House appropriations panel is chaired by Nueva Ecija Rep. Mikaela Suansing, a lawmaker in her second term just like Marcos.
Marcos said there was no need to rock the boat since there would be no scheduled committee-level deliberations when the plenary debates on the proposed P6.7 trillion budget for 2026 start on Monday, September 22.
“There are no committee hearings, actually. We don’t do committee hearings during the plenary debates when all members are encouraged to be on the floor,” Marcos said.
“Without committee hearings, we don’t need to change anything in terms of the composition of the chairmanships and the leadership of the House,” he added.
Marcos said that the budget reforms initiated during the leadership of his uncle and former Speaker Martin Romualdez of Leyte, mainly allowing the attendance of budget watchdogs in budget deliberations and putting forward their suggestions before House appropriations panel leaders, would remain in place.
“The reforms will carry on because those do not depend on who is the Speaker. That’s for the whole institution,” Marcos said. –NB, GMA Integrated News
