Filipino night market taking place in Toronto this weekend

A three-day night market dedicated to celebrating the rich heritage of Filipino culture and ube is taking over a popular mall in the city this weekend.

Kicking off Sept. 26 and running until Sept. 28, Ube Wonderland takes place at Scarborough Town Centre. The free and immersive celebration will “spotlight the delightful culinary magic of ube while showcasing the diversity of Filipino arts and live performances.”

“Our playful, family-friendly atmosphere is inspired by the joyful spirit of Canada’s Wonderland,” organizers said. “Don’t miss this exceptional opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant riches of Filipino heritage and create lasting memories.”

Expect plating demonstrations from skilled chefs, folk performances featuring traditional dances and, if you bring the kids along, interactive children’s workshops.

Hosted by Pinoy Night Market Toronto, the live entertainment lineup includes performances from DJ Rizzy, Alvin the Magician, GM Collective, Kalye Luna and more. There will even be an appearance from Miss Philippines Canada.

Ube Wonderland will run on Friday, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., with the theme “Purple Flavour Explosion.” On Saturday stop by, between noon and 10 p.m., for the “Celebration of Heritage” theme. The festival will operate on Sunday, from noon to 10 p.m., with the theme “Future of Flavour and Art.”

“Ube Wonderland promises to be a joyful celebration where attendees can enjoy delicious food, uplifting music and cultural connections,” organizers said.

And if you’re looking for more ways to add a little bit of fun to your weekend, the 13th annual Toronto Garlic Festival returns to the city on Sept. 28.

The free celebration takes place on Spadina Road from Davenport Road to Dupont Street for a “full day of food, festivities and, of course, as much garlic as you can eat.”

Presented by Dupont by the Castle Business Improvement Area, festivalgoers can enjoy live music, free garlic shots, a garlic bulb cracking contest, a garlic breath contest and a vampire costume contest.

“This festival will be full of garlicky fun,” organizers said.

The inaugural Water/Fall Festival takes place on Sept. 27 and 28 for locals and visitors to “experience Toronto’s waterfront in a new way.”

Hosted by the Waterfront BIA, festivalgoers will find dynamic activations, which include public art installations on and off the water, harvest-themed food and drink markets, live music and dance performances, a sustainable makers market and more.

And if you can’t make it this weekend, the festival will run on Oct. 4 and 5. Find the Water/Fall Festival on Queens Quay from Bathurst Street to Bay Street.
