Filipino journalist deserves title of ‘hero’ of her people

Nobel Peace Prize winner is not a hero to many Filipinos — Oct. 13

Letter writer Nestor Almazan comments on the news that a courageous Filipino journalist, Maria Ressa, won a Nobel Peace Prize. He writes that she “can never be accepted as a hero of the Filipino people,” and that her news outlet is detested by many Filipinos who literally adore the president, Rodrigo Duterte.

However, the president is accused internationally of human rights abuses. Seems that the woman prize winner is far more worthy of the name “hero” than a president who believes in and practices harsh punishment such as the death penalty.
