Filipino community in Colchester open summer celebration

In previous years, the Filipino community celebrated the event in a smaller circle.

Now, as a new group has introduced a new festival, the event will be open to the public.

Jia Amada, who is part of the organising committee, said: “Opening up the celebration was initiated by nurses at the hospital in Colchester, to host an event that is inclusive and celebrates the heritage with everyone.

“We will start off with a parade of colours, where we also want to invite people of other nations to show their textiles and colours.

“This celebration is to provide a sense of community support and to celebrate what makes the communities in Colchester so special.”

Following the parade, the event will continue with an introduction of the national anthem and a welcome dance performed by the Anhaw dance artists.

Colchester’s mayor Mike Lilley, and alderman Lyn Barton will continue with a speech, before Bejoy Sebastian, president of the Royal College of Nursing, will speak about the importance of inclusivity.

The afternoon will commence with a karaoke competition, with entries open from 10am to 12pm.

Jia said: “We are very excited to welcome everyone for this special celebration of Filipino heritage and culture.

“We make up the third biggest population in the UK in the health care sector, and we want people to educate people about what makes our culture unique.

“There is so much we love to share and so much we want to teach people about.

“All earnings from this event will be donated to charity, as we are supporting a day care centre in the Philippines with the event.”

Additionally, the event will welcome acclaimed actress Bangs Garcia and London-based band Trigger Me Senpai for special performances.

Families and children are welcome to join the free event, which provides food and drink, as well as face painting, activities and bouncy castles.

The Colchester Filipino Festival will take place on August 2 between 9.30am and 8pm at the Great Horkesley Village Hall.
