7th August 2025 – (Hong Kong) An employer recently took to the internet to publicly criticise their hired Filipino domestic helper for allegedly leaving during a family trip back to the Philippines. Prior to the departure, the helper had inquired about receiving an advance on half a month’s salary, causing concerns for the employer regarding potential debts incurred during the helper’s time in Hong Kong.

Criticism from netizens has been mixed, with some faulting the helper for leaving without proper communication, citing the existence of an employment contract. However, a significant portion of online critics, upon reviewing the employer’s past posts, have condemned the employer for a history of harsh treatment towards the helper, including regular criticism and mental strain, which they believe led to the helper feeling overwhelmed and choosing to leave abruptly. The helper’s farewell note highlighted deteriorating mental health as a reason for departure.
The employer, in their online posts on Threads, publicly shamed the domestic helper, accusing them of absconding during the family trip and even requesting an advance on their salary, suspecting ulterior motives. The employer shared two photos of the helper’s note expressing a desire to return to the Philippines due to declining mental health and apologising for leaving abruptly. Another photo showed the helper boarding a flight back to the Philippines.
Netizens have criticised the employer for their harsh treatment towards the helper, with many suggesting that the employer’s behaviour contributed to the helper’s decision to leave. The online community has expressed concerns over the employer’s conduct, highlighting potential mistreatment and psychological pressure on the helper.
