Filipino tourist dies in Hong Kong after taxi crash

MANILA, Philippines — A 35-year-old Filipino tourist was killed in Hong Kong yesterday after a taxi crashed into him outside the entrance of a hotel in the Tsuen Wan West district, the Philippine Consulate General confirmed on Wednesday, August 6.

The vehicular crash occurred outside the Nina Hotel Tsuen Wan West on Yeung Uk Road, where the 80-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle and struck the victim before colliding with a wall, according to reports. The Filipino tourist was rendered unconscious and pronounced dead after being rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital.

“The deceased’s remains are now housed in Kwai Chung Public Mortuary and the taxi driver involved in the accident is in police custody,” the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong said in a statement sent to reporters by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The consulate general is currently assisting the victim’s family, who are expected to arrive in Hong Kong soon to arrange shipment of their relative’s remains. They are also coordinating with the Hong Kong police while the investigation is ongoing.

“The Consulate General offers its deepest condolences to the deceased’s family and prays for his eternal rest,” the Philippine mission said in the statement.

The Philippines is one of Hong Kong’s biggest tourist markets, with an estimated 1.2 million Filipino travelers visiting Hong Kong in 2024.
