Why Does Philippines, Top Exporter Of Nurses Face A Shortage At Home? | Undercover Asia

The Philippines is the leading exporter of nurses to foreign countries. On average, 13,000 nurses leave the country every year. However, a month after the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Philippines, a sudden deployment ban on nurses was imposed.

Nurses who have spent a fortune securing jobs overseas now find themselves strong-armed to stay and serve the country. But why do so many nurses want to leave the country in the first place? As we follow the nurses working in the frontlines of the pandemic, we find out how the Philippine healthcare system leaves its nurses overworked, underpaid and unprotected.

  • Filipino nurses joke:
Motto during university : to serve the country
Motto after graduation : forget the country πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  • I've taken up Nursing course in college here in the Philippines but shifted to another course. I can say Nursing is hard. You need to sacrifice your MENTAL, EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL WELL BEING. Saludo sa lahat ng mga nurses! πŸ™πŸΌ YOU ARE OUR MODERN DAY HEROES!!! πŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌ

  • Napaka liit NG sahod sa Pinas Kaya abroad ang sulosyon

  • Because they had a pandemic ,dont blame the government or President banding nurses its Because all country do band anywhere, all country do band not only the nurses, but this news sounds like pandemic was not a reason ,all country same do ,even japan,to prevent spread virus.

  • This nurses not serve their mother land is a traydor. Dont come back if war time is come in the country to serving you! Selffish mind!

  • These nurse are told that their pay is maybe ten times more than in the Philippines, but they are not told that the cost of living in the U.S. And the U.K. And Europe is at least ten times more.

  • ΰΌΌ ぀ β—•_β—• ༽぀ In many cases, most nurses who work overseas get paid well. However, If that nurse has families back home (parents, children), the nurse is obligated to send back some of that money back home. Job contractors also gets a share of your salary so yes you make money but not a whole lot but its better than being back to their native country and not get work. You get the work but the salary dont compensate. The salary system in the PH is like going through a dark tunnel and no one really knows the standards due to unregulated businesses standards.

  • Amazing!!

  • Things likely won't improve with another corrupt Marcos in the presidency.

  • Bruhh, it is stated here that the real monthly pay for nurses here is around 490 dollars which is 25, 764 pesos but when you go to job hiring sites its on the side of higher wages. When I scroll through those sites I'd usually see 15,000 to 20,000 pesos which is 285 to 380 dollars for starting or junior nurses. Heck, you'd be spending a lifetime's worth of luck if you see a pay more than 20,000 if you're a still a new nurse. I've even seen a pay as low as 10,000 pesos (190 dollars) which is a bit underhanded and cutting a bit too low. So I understand if nurses are looking for jobs outside of the hospital since it would most likely have higher pay

  • In UK Filipino nurses are the nurses who keep national health service (NHS) going not Brits, I really appreciate them after being taken care of from an operation. I wish government would give Filipino nurses a 10,000% pay rise, I could only give a thank you card & Dutch biscuits to my nurses.

  • Its not enough being a nurse in the philippines lower salary

  • Very poor pay

  • Compare The salary and life style between Canada and the Philippines no wonder there is so many nurses from the Philippines in Canada , Also other medical workers lab techs , X ray techs and other medical types Including Doctors ,I was in the Cardiac ward in a Vancouver Vancouver area hospital it was mostly Filipinos as the nurses

  • I used to work for almost 3 yrs as a Nurse in the Philippines. I volunteered and also work in the public sector wherein there were months I get paid and months without pay. So sad. Now, so thankful and happy to be working as RN in the US. Best decision ever to leave the Philippines 5 yrs ago for good. US is not perfect but Nurses here are treated with respect and dignity. Something that you cannot get in the Philippines.

  • at 29:28, I don't know if I will laugh or I want to slap him really hard on the face knowing that he is referring to pharmally. This administration is a huge joke, from philhealth to pharmally. Seriously?!!!
