“Eraserheads: Combo on the Run,” a 2025 music documentary chronicling the journey of the iconic Filipino band, is set to be screened at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) from July 24 to 27, marking what producers say is a historic moment for Filipino cinema on the global pop culture stage.
According to a statement from its director and producer Maria Diane Ventura, the documentary is believed to be the first Filipino-produced music documentary officially featured at SDCC.
“I’m incredibly grateful to have this opportunity to represent our people and country on a more global platform,” Ventura said in a press release.
The screening will be held at Exhibit Hall 6BCF and will include a panel discussion featuring Ventura and Eraserheads frontman Ely Buendia, as confirmed by multiple Philippine entertainment outlets.
Released in Philippine cinemas on March 21, “Combo on the Run” documents the band’s rise, influence and eventual 2022 reunion concert, Ang Huling El Bimbo. Originally a limited run, the film earned extended screenings after strong public reception.
In conjunction with the SDCC screening, Kid Heroes Publications is releasing a limited-edition one-shot comic book inspired by the film. Titled “Combo on the Run,” the anthology reimagines the band members as music-powered superheroes. Cover art is provided by noted Filipino and Filipino-American comic book artists Whilce Portacio (for the SDCC variant) and Stephen Segovia (for the SuperManila edition).
While SDCC has previously featured various international films and documentaries through its Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival, this is the first time a Philippine music documentary is included in its official lineup, according to the film’s producers. / LQ3
