MANILA, Philippines — A New York-based Filipino doctor captured his third International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) 2025 World Master Jiu-Jitsu Championships crown at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino in Nevada recently.

Dr. Shawn Tomokazu Kato, 37, rose to the occasion in the finale by executing a footlock submission maneuver on American Renmel Monzon Tiong in just under a minute to seize the men’s roosterweight division title.

“I’m so grateful to be able to continue competing in the sport I love,” Kato said. “I hope to inspire other working professionals to pursue their dreams and know that with discipline, heart and dedication, it’s possible to compete at the highest level.”

In his semifinal match, Kato secured a hard-fought victory over another American, Martin Sandoval Jr., winning by two points and advantages to advance to the championship round.

Kato, a Filipino-Japanese, grew up in Manila before moving to the United States. His latest win adds to his previous world titles in 2018 and 2024, underscoring his longevity and consistency at the highest level,

Beyond his athletic achievements, Kato, a doctor of physical therapy, is also a dedicated health and wellness practitioner. He blends his professional expertise with his passion for Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Kato’s journey reflects the growing movement of professionals balancing careers with elite competition, proving that excellence in sport and life can go hand in hand.

Kato trains under the Miyao Brothers at Studio 1908 and also under CheckMat Manila when he is visiting the Philippines.
